Our story

How JMc Crafts Began: From Pebble Art to a Little Business, I Love

Sometimes the best things start without you ever really planning them.

For me, that was JMc Crafts.

My journey began in 2018 with pebble art. I started creating pictures using pebbles and had the opportunity to sell my work in my sister's shop.

Seeing something I had made displayed for sale, and then having people actually choose to buy my creations, was such a lovely feeling.

At that point I don't think I realised quite where it would lead.

But that was the beginning of JMc Crafts.

It All Started with Pebbles

My early pieces were created using pebbles, turning simple natural materials into pictures and keepsakes.

I loved the fact that no two pebbles were exactly the same. A shape could give me an idea for a person, an animal or a completely different design.

Selling my work through my sister's shop gave me the confidence to keep creating and experimenting.

And, little by little, JMc Crafts began to grow.

Our history

Then I Discovered Sea Glass 🌊

Living in beautiful Pembrokeshire, I've always had the coast around me.

Over time, sea glass became another material I loved working with.

There's something fascinating about finding a little piece of glass on the beach that has been shaped and softened by the sea. Every piece is different, and quite often the shape itself gives me the idea for what I should make from it.

My love of sea glass eventually developed into my Coastal Collection by J, with sea glass artwork, frames, jewellery and other coastal creations.

I still love working with pebbles, shells, driftwood and other materials too. For me, it's about looking at something ordinary and imagining what it could become.

A Little Piece of Pembrokeshire

One of my favourite things about creating with genuine Pembrokeshire Sea glass is knowing that each piece has its own story.

I might find a tiny piece on a local beach, bring it home, clean it and put it with my collection.

Sometimes I know immediately what I want to make with it.

Other times it might sit there for weeks or months until one day I look at it and suddenly think, that’s exactly what I need!

Then something that washed up on a Pembrokeshire beach begins a completely new life as a picture, gift or piece of jewellery.

JMc Crafts by J & R

The business has continued to grow and change over the years, and my husband Richard now has his own collection too.

Timeless by R includes jewellery, watches and other pieces, while Coastal Collection by J is home to my coastal creations.

Together they make JMc Crafts by J & R.

What started with my pebble pictures being sold in my sister's shop has grown into something neither of us could have predicted back in 2018.

One of the Best Parts: Meeting Customers

I love making things, but one of my favourite parts of JMc Crafts is meeting the people who buy them.

At markets I can explain where I've found my sea glass, talk about how I've made something and hear people's own memories of Pembrokeshire and the coast.

Sometimes a customer spots a piece, and it immediately means something to them.

That's one of the reasons I love handmade crafts.

They don't have to be identical.

In fact, I don't want them to be.

The Next Chapter

I'm still experimenting, learning and coming up with new ideas.

Some work, some don't, and occasionally an idea turns into something completely different from what I originally imagined!

Through this blog I'd like to share more of that journey.

I'll take you behind the scenes of JMc Crafts, share some of my beachcombing finds, show you how some of my creations come together, talk about sea glass and coastal crafting, introduce new ideas and share what life is really like running a small handmade business.

And to think...

it all started with a few pebbles and a space in my sister's shop. ❤️
